Why Everyone Should Train

As a personal trainer in Toronto, Canada, I feel very lucky that we live in such an active city. There are countless gyms, fitness clubs, crossfit gyms, bootcamps… you name it, we got it. Working out is almost a part of the culture.

But all too often, I still hear the same thing:
”I’m not one of those workout people.”

And I try not to judge, I REALLY do, especially because working out is my favourite thing. As I’m writing this I’m actually a little frustrated because I have a busy day and can’t workout, even though I did my usual workout last night for that exact reason.

If I let my judgement roam free - just a little bit - I would say that people that “aren’t workout people” are probably people who are lacking confidence. Perhaps not as a person - they might be quite confident - but saying you’re not a workout person is like saying you’re not good at instrument, having never picked one up.

Does playing guitar once make you a guitar player? No, of course not. You need practice. People play guitar with the understanding that if they work at it, eventually they’ll be able to shred.

I wish more musicians worked out, truly, because there are countless parallels.

I think that if EVERYONE just picked up some weights, did it regularly, for 6 months, it would CHANGE their life. In a world with few guarantees, the fact that lifting weights will change your life is one of them.

The big problem I think is that most people undersell themselves. They either think “I’ll never be that ripped” or “I’ll never be able to lift that much.” That’s like saying you can’t grow your hair out because it’ll never get long. You don’t need to grow your hair out like Thor or Fabio, but if you just simply don’t quit, and never cut your hair, the result is inevitable.

I may have lost the metaphor a bit, but since this is my first blog, that’s probably a good place to start anyways.

The only reason lifting weights wouldn’t change your life, is because you feel like it won’t. The only reason you feel like you won’t get strong, is because you feel like you won’t. The only reason you haven’t started lifting weights yet, is because you don’t believe that you’re able to do it.

I’m here to tell you that you can.
